PCB looking to add two new venues for HBL PSL 2021

Wednesday, 26 February 2020 by lifesillypk

With the fifth edition of Habib Bank Limited (HBL) Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020 just around the corner, the level of excitement in this cricket-mad nation continues to surge every day. As many as 34 matches will be played over 32 days, but the fact that these contests will be held in four cities – Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi – adds to the fervour.

Wasim Khan, the Chief Executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board, believes the upcoming edition will take the game to more and more audiences in the country, which, in turn, will help in normalising the staging of top-flight cricket in the country.

“The easy thing for us could have been to host HBL PSL 2020 matches in just Lahore and Karachi, but we wanted to take this league wider as we were bringing it to Pakistan for the first time,” Wasim told PCB Digital. “We want to make the game accessible to fans all over the country so they can watch their heroes in action and this edition is going to be a catalyst for it. By next year, we want to be in a position to add a couple of more venues. We are looking to develop more and more venues which provides us an opportunity to take the game around the country.”

“We are looking at Peshawar, Multan, Faisalabad, which hosted the National T20 Cup and needs a little upgradation after which it can be an international venue, and Hyderabad, for which we are working with Sindh government for it upgradation,” he added.

The HBL PSL has played a vital role in the complete resumption of international cricket in the country. After eight HBL PSL matches in Karachi last year, Sri Lanka toured Karachi for a three-match ODI series in September and returned for the second of the two-match Test series in the metropolitan city in December.

Over the past few months, Rawalpindi’s Pindi Cricket Stadium has also been included in the roaster of venues which have hosted international cricket in the recent years and it will host eight matches.

With South Africa expected to tour Pakistan in late March for a three-match T20I series, the PCB Chief Executive revealed that he had pitched Rawalpindi as a venue for the matches to Cricket South Africa.

“The tour of South Africa is very much a waiting game now and by the end of the month we should have a clear position. Their head of security is expected in Pakistan during the initial games of the HBL Pakistan Super League. He has all the security plans for each of the different venues. He and the board of South Africa are very comfortable with touring. We have to make it work logistically as South Africa finish the tour of India on 18 March and we don’t finish the HBL PSL till 22 March,” he said. “For them to go back and come again won’t be possible so we will have to see whether we can have them sit in the UAE for six or eight and provide them the support and practice facilities or we fly them straight in here and provide all that here.”

“Lahore and Karachi venues have been diluted because we have been playing our entire cricket here and because of that the wickets here are also suffering. We now have Rawalpindi as a venue available. For me, it makes sense to go there and play the three matches. I have suggested Rawalpindi as a venue to South Africa and they are comfortable with the suggestion,” he added.

The PCB announced a new Cricket Committee last month which will now be headed by former Test spinner Iqbal Qasim. The revamped Cricket Committee will now have representatives of current domestic cricketers, match officials and women’s cricket and it will hold its first session on 19 February in Karachi.

The committee has invited Misbahul Haq, chief selector and head coach, and Haroon Rasheed, PCB Director – Domestic Cricket Operations, for updates and briefings on the Pakistan national men’s team’s run and the learnings from the implementation of the new domestic structure.

The committee will meet quarterly to advice PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani on cricket-related matters.

Speaking on the PCB Cricket Committee, Wasim said: “It is a new-look, a new-feel cricket committee. We are meeting on 19 February a day before the PSL in Karachi and we will put down three more meetings in the diary so we are very clear on the direction we are taking.

“We have revamped the Cricket Committee after Misbah left that group. It was very important for us to streamline it. I was filling in the role of the chairman of the committee after Mohsin Khan decided to stand down. It is never good governance for any organistaion when CEO is also a chair of such a committee.

“If there are four or five PCB staffers sitting on the committee the recommendations it makes wouldn’t be independent. So, I was very clear in my mind that I will not continue in that role. Now there will be Zakir Khan, PCB Director – International Cricket Operations, to help set up meetings and I will be sitting there as co-opt member.

“We will have Misbah for the first meeting to update on the selection matters and talk us about the performances in Australia. We will be having Haroon Rashid to have a thorough look at the domestic season and he will be updating us on the learnings from this season and how are we implementing them moving forward.

“We will also be discussion how we will implement a thorough report on the status of pitches in Pakistan which was submitted to us by Andy Atkinson when he was here in January. There are a lot of things that we are going to touch upon but I want us to be focus in those meetings.

“The cricket committee was always set up as an advisory committee. It always had a strong sway and strong rationale for why it was set up. It will provide wide-ranging and firm recommendations to the chairman, which he will take very seriously as it is the group which has the expertise.

“The issues which are being discussed in this committee are very much relevant to the people of Pakistan and to Pakistan cricket.”

Sky Cricket to Broadcast Pakistan Super League in New Zealand for the First Time Ever

Thursday, 13 February 2020 by lifesillypk

Pakistan Super League (PSL) has become a hugely successful brand throughout the globe. To add to its popularity and reach more audiences, a prominent broadcaster has decided to air the tournament for the first time since its inception in 2016.

Sky will be broadcasting the 5th edition of PSL for fans in New Zealand, who were previously unable to watch the action live on TV.

The news was shared by Tanzil Khawaja, an Assistant Producer for Sky Cricket, on Twitter earlier today.

Massive news that @SKYNZ has decided to show the #PSL for the first time ever. Just goes to show that the brand continues to grow and be ever more attractive.

I'm 100% sure it won't be long before we see the #PSL on a mainstream UK channel.

— Tanzil Khawaja (@TanzilKhawaja) February 13, 2020

The official list of broadcasters for PSL 2020 is yet to be announced by the PCB.

The time difference between Pakistan and New Zealand could be a hurdle in garnering viewership. The matches are scheduled at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm Pakistan Standard Time. For reference, the first match will begin at 10:00 pm in New Zealand, whereas the second match will air at 3:00 am.

The opening ceremony of PSL is scheduled on 20th February at National Stadium Karachi.

Wednesday, 29 January 2020 by lifesillypk

“Tayyar Hain nicely sums up the mood of the Pakistan cricket fans who are seen embracing, rejoicing and celebrating to welcome the league to Pakistan at the back of home international matches,” says Ehsan Mani

Tayyar Hain, the official anthem of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, was presented for viewing to all stakeholders in an impressive ceremony in a local hotel on Tuesday evening before it was officially released ahead of the 9pm news bulletins.

Tayyar Hain is now available for viewing at the PSL YouTube Channel and will be played at the venues in the build up to and during this season’s flagship event.

The anthem launch ceremony was attended by representatives of the six franchisees, sponsors, media and the PCB staff, who were unanimous in giving their thumbs-up to the song and its video, which reflects the air of festivity gripping the entire nation with fans and supporters from all walks of life celebrating the home-coming of one of the most popular leagues on the planet.

After Tayyar Hain was presented to the stakeholders half an hour before its official release, there was a brief Q&A session in which the team representatives, players and senior members of the media participated and not only shared their experiences but also spoke about their expectations.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani said“The release of the anthem officially launches our marketing campaign for the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020. Tayyar Hain nicely sums up the mood of the Pakistan cricket fans who are seen embracing, rejoicing and celebrating to welcome the league to Pakistan at the back of home international matches.

“What pleases me more is all the key stakeholders tonight stand firmly behind this league and I have now no doubts that this year’s event will set new benchmarks and standards. I am confident the collective approach I am seeing tonight, will translate into providing unique experience to the fans in a high-pressure tournament in which every match will count.

“I want to congratulate the PCB team for their hard work in putting this together and hope they will continue to work with the same zeal and passion until the final ball is bowled on 22 March at the Gaddafi Stadium.”

Atif Rana CEO of Lahore Qalandars said“Tayyar Hain is sizzling and I have no doubts this will become one of the most popular numbers in the coming days. The league is evolving and we are improving and getting better with each event, and tonight’s event establishes this fact as all key stakeholders are celebrating the hosting of the event in Pakistan.”

Javed Afridi Owner of Peshawar Zalmi said“This is Pakistan’s league and we stand firmly with the PCB to make it a huge success. Tayyar Hain correctly captures the mood in Pakistan and there is no doubt it is for everyone to celebrate as this has been a phenomenal year for Pakistan cricket with the return of Test cricket. A strong Pakistan cricket means a strong HBL PSL, which, in turn, means stronger teams, top notch cricket in front of packed houses.”

Alamgir Khan Tareen Owner of Multan Sultans said“Tonight, I am feeling the sense of being in a very special place. It is wonderful that all stakeholders have gathered under one roof to celebrate the homecoming of one of the premier competitions. Tayyar Hain is the perfect anthem for PSL V. The music, lyrics and videography are from the top drawer. After listening to Tayyar Hain, I can’t wait for the HBL PSL 2020 to begin.”

Nadeem Omar Owner of Quetta Gladiators said“Tayyar Hain perfectly encapsulates the Pakistani flavour and makes one excited for the HBL PSL and cricket in general. Every HBL PSL anthem has been better than its predecessor and this one has set a new benchmark. The presence of the cricketing stars is bound to make the fans watch it again and again.

Ali Naqvi of Owner of Islamabad United said “It is one of those compositions which reinvigorate entire stadiums. I could feel that energy in me when I first heard it. Tayyar Hain is definitely going in my playlist. HBL PSL has evolved into a profound brand since its launch and I am hopeful that its popularity will grow manifold.

Salman Iqbal Owner of Karachi Kings said “Tayyar Hain is a true reflection of the diverse Pakistani culture. I am pretty sure that soon this anthem will be blasting out of every car from Shahra-e-Faisal to the Abdul Sattar Edhi road. I thoroughly enjoyed the music composition and its lyrics, and like the HBL PSL, they were full of zeal.

Mr. Naveed Asghar Chief Marketing Officer of HBL said“HBL has been the lead sponsor for the Pakistan Super League since its inception. I take pride in saying that HBLPSL has not only become the single largest sporting event in the country, but also the most loved and eagerly awaited platform. We continue to partner with PCB to make this platform bigger and better every year and the official anthem is an integral part of this celebration. This year’s anthem – Tayyar Hain embodies everything that we stand for as partners. We are thrilled to host the biggest cricketing event in Pakistan to enable the dreams of our fans”

Senior journalist Aqeel Ahmed said“Media is one of PCB’s important stakeholders as it provide extension coverage to their activities and event. I am pleased we have been actively involved in tonight’s event, which gives us the confidence that we are valued and respected by the PCB. On behalf of all my colleagues, I assure you the media will continue to play its part in enhancing the image of Pakistan by providing positive coverage to the HBL PSL so that we can continue to send out strong messages to the world, which, in turn, will attract more international teams to resume their tours of Pakistan.”

Tayyar Hain, through its lyrics and music, captures the mood and celebrates the fact that the entire HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 is taking place in Pakistan for the very first time.

Tayyar Hain’s video reflects the air of festivity gripping the entire nation with fans and supporters from all walks of life celebrating the home-coming of one of the most popular leagues on the planet.

Tayyar Hain is a collaboration of Pakistan’s rock icon Ali Azmat, folk music legend Arif Lohar, former Awaz singer Haroon Rashid and famous pop artist Asim Azhar. It has been produced by renowned musician Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan (Xulfi), while Kamal Khan of Laal Kabootar fame has directed the anthem video.

A total of 22 instruments have been used in creating Tayyar Hain, including indigenous instruments such as tumba, chimta, rubab and harmonium, and the video also casts Pakistan star cricketers Babar Azam, Hasan Ali, Rumman Raees, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Shan Masood.

Pakistan cricketers take Indian cab driver to dinner in Brisbane after he refuses fare

Tuesday, 26 November 2019 by lifesillypk

ABC radio presenter Alison Mitchell narrated the heartwarming story of an Indian cab driver who got treated by Pakistan players Yasir Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah among others.

Five Pakistan cricketers including Yasir Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Naseem Shah, treated an Indian cab driver at a restaurant in Brisbane back on Friday, after the latter refused to accept any fare from them as he is himself a fan of the sport.

On the fourth day of the first Test between Pakistan and Australia at the Gabba, in a conversation with former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson, ABC radio presenter Alison Mitchell narrated the heartwarming story of the taxi driver. She met the driver on Sunday morning when she took a ride to the stadium ahead of play.

“When the cabbie got to know we are headed to the stadium, he asked us are you watching or working. When we told him we work in the commentary, he got very excited,” she said.

Moments later, the driver showed her a photo of himself on his phone at a restaurant along with members of the Pakistan cricket team.

“Turns out, a couple of days ago, he was called to the Pakistan cricket team hotel. He picked up five of the Pakistan players,” she continued.

“And he is a cricket fan, so he was naturally excited to have them in the taxi and they wanted to go to an Indian restaurant for a meal. He drove them to the restaurant and when they got out he said it’s on me.”

The cricketers, including the trio of bowlers that featured in the first Test, then showed their gratitude by asking the driver to join them for dinner.

Australia drew first blood in the series after defeating Pakistan by an innings and 5 runs in Brisbane on Sunday itself, after Marnus Labuschagne (185) and David Warner (154) helped Australia accumulate a first-innings tally of 580 in reply to Pakistan’s 240.
